An open question to the English-language Wikipedia

Wikipedia

Why is it that this story about three people killed in an avalanche in Scotland is the number-one News item on Wikipedia's News Feed, but this more current story about 10 people killed in an avalanche in Turkey is nowhere to be found? I'm pretty sure that 10 is more than three - but, then again, Scotland is a neat little country with golf courses and whiskey, whereas the Turkish avalanche happened in a fairly poor part of a non-European country.

It's easy to see why people (not just Turks, mind you) can get bitter about how their suffering doesn't ever get reported in the west? Granted, Wikipedia is not principally a news outlet, but we'll see which one gets more coverage in the upcoming days.

Taking the contrary view, isn't it a function of Wikipedia being open-sourced? Doesn't it make sense that English-language Wikipedia would be written by English-language speakers, and thus more focused on activities in English-speaking countries? For example, if there were an Al-Jazeira Wikipedia, I would suspect that the Turkish avalanche would receive more play. Sort of a a variant on the old joke about the Boston Globe and other provincial newspapers: "Hiroshima Decimated: Hub Man Feared Lost". DGK

Well al-Jazeera is Arabic, not Turkish, but I see your point. I guess it was just incredibly striking to me because the two avalanches occurred literally within 24 hours of each other.

Ha ha! I knew that. I was thinking more spheres of interest rather than language. Your point is well taken though. Remember what you wrote about the hypocrisy of Western response to Bosnian genocide while allowing African genocide to go virtually unchecked. Since you now describe your political leanings as "realpolitik" I know you get it. DGK

Why did CNN devote night after night after night of news to the disappearnce of Kaylie Anthony, a white baby? Probably for the same reason. AKG
